In God We Trust

We have heard and seen the quote In God We Trust for most of our lives, but what does it mean and where did it originate?

 God has been referenced throughout the history of our country.

 During it’s founding, Divine Providence was reverenced often by our founders.

 His presence is obvious to the astute reader of the Revolutionary War - as well as countless other examples.

 Here are a few direct quotes referencing God from the early days of our country.

 

 Thomas Jefferson – The Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator…

 

 George Washington

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor.

 

Benjamin Franklin

Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and Nature.

 

 God was at the foundation of this great country – and it’s apparent by the credit these founders gave to His hand.

 

 The Truths We Must Build Upon

You have seen us share many messages with this community.

 It is our desire to share these important truths more frequently and have it be a more integral part of our products.

 It is these important truths that - if followed - will not only help build us as individual Patriots, but will also strengthen and build this great country.

 The opposite can also be said if we turn away from them.

 

 Where Did “In God We Trust” originate?

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War.

Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins.

 From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861.

 It was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania, and read:

 Dear Sir: You are about to submit your annual report to the Congress respecting the affairs of the national finances.

One fact touching our currency has hitherto been seriously overlooked. I mean the recognition of the Almighty God in some form on our coins.

You are probably a Christian. What if our Republic were not shattered beyond reconstruction? Would not the antiquaries of succeeding centuries rightly reason from our past that we were a heathen nation? What I propose is that instead of the goddess of liberty we shall have next inside the 13 stars a ring inscribed with the words PERPETUAL UNION; within the ring the allseeing eye, crowned with a halo; beneath this eye the American flag, bearing in its field stars equal to the number of the States united; in the folds of the bars the words GOD, LIBERTY, LAW.

This would make a beautiful coin, to which no possible citizen could object. This would relieve us from the ignominy of heathenism. This would place us openly under the Divine protection we have personally claimed. From my hearth I have felt our national shame in disowning God as not the least of our present national disasters.

Conclusion

Our belief in the Almighty God is a central tenant of Patriotism.

 It is that belief that has not only protected this great nation, but also carried us through challenging times.

 It will no doubt be an important part of our history as we seek to maintain the God given rights that we all hold so dear.

 It is the duty of each of us who believe in God to maintain His presence in our country - as the fight to remove God is increasing rapidly.
